The spookiest time of year is upon us and I am bursting with excitement. If every month could be like October I would be the happiest human being on the planet. As a horror movie junkie and lover of all things creepy-crawly, bewitching, and gruesome-it’s been a rather long nine months getting here. Halloween is right around the corner and that means it’s time to re-stock the candy stash, bust out the ghostly decor, and get started on those festive desserts I love making. It’s never too early to teach your children how to give back to their community, especially when there are so many opportunities for them at their very own school. For the past year or so I found a passion in volunteering and being an active PTA member at my daughter’s elementary school. Whether it’s collecting Box Tops or purchasing from the seasonal fundraiser, I am always willing to do my part in helping to support the education of our future generation. This is why I was excited to hear that one of our favorite restaurants, Red Robin, has created a new program to help build better schools.

It may be the beginning of September but the fall season has already made its way into our home. This time of year can never arrive sooner and once the iconic  pumpkin spiced latte is released, that’s a green light to get the decorations out. Fall is the feel-good season because it opens the door for festive activities, hay rides, colorful leaves, homemade baked goodies that leave the house smelling delicious, crisp cool air, and the excuse to eat all things made with pumpkin! While these are all reasons to get excited, there is one big change this time of year that I can always do without- dry skin. One would think that living in Florida would solve this dilemma since it’s hot and sticky the majority of the time. The truth is, dry skin creeps up on your regardless of the weather conditions. You can keep your skin soft and hydrated by exfoliating and moisturizing daily.

After School Snack Tray

We may only be two weeks into the new school year but First Grade has been keeping Toodie and I both very busy. Adapting to a structured routine after a relaxed summer has actually been much easier than I anticipated. I’m still struggling with the early mornings but it can’t all be sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s been a complete breeze. Waking up earlier than need be, writing thoughtful lunch notes, carefully crafting themed bento boxes, ironing uniforms, and making flashcards can be exhausting. Insert more over-achieving mom problems here. First Grade is proving to be much different than Kindergarten, from the challenging curriculum to the weekly spelling tests. Each day there is something new to be learned. If there is one thing that makes it all worth it, it’s the enlightening car ride home where I get to hear about the highlights of Toodie’s day.

A Snuggle A Day Keeps The Jitters Away

Yesterday the summer officially came to an end when I dropped Toodie off for her first day of First Grade. As an overly emotional parent I had the expected feelings of excitement, fear, and a hint of sadness. I was going to miss hanging out with my little person all day. I knew the house was going to be extremely quiet without her giggles and endless energy. It always takes me a while to get back into the swing of things the first week or two. After last year I have learned it’s perfectly natural to twiddle my thumbs while counting the hours until I can pick her up, kiss that little face off, and ask a million questions about what she did in class. Of course, she still looks at me like I am crazy but I can’t help but act as if she was away for months. We’ve kind of become attached at the hip as she has gotten older. I know it won’t always be this way so I am savoring every moment before she becomes a teenager and wants nothing to do with me!

Summer is winding down but my mixer is still going full speed. With school starting in less than a week I am preparing for a baking drought as reality sets back in.
