I hope that spooky saying is starting to grow on you because you’ll be hearing a lot of it next weekend. Halloween is so close I can taste it- or maybe that’s all the Hershey’s candies I’ve been scarfing down. I am so excited that the night of goblins, ghouls, and ghosts is almost here. By this time the kiddos in my neighborhood usually are too. Strategic candy collecting routes are being formed as I write this. Trick-or-treating is serious business around here.
In fact, last year Halloween fell on a Friday and we received our first trick-or-treater at 6:30 in the morning! I kid you not, I had a tween knock on my door as I was getting Toodie ready for school. The sun wasn’t even out yet but it was hard to get mad at him because I understood his logic. My house is right next to the high school’s bus stop, the lights were on, and I had a huge empty cauldron sitting outside the door. That screams “come get your handful of candy still hidden in the house!” I suppose. While it was humorous, I am thankful Halloween falls on a Saturday this year before early morning trick-or-treating becomes a trend in our neighborhood!
Whether you live in a neighborhood with a lot of children or your prone to receiving teen visitors with giant pillow cases, one things for sure- you better have enough candy to hand out! Hershey’s candy is a Halloween staple and their BIG bags at Walmart contain all the popular treats like Reese’s, Kit Kat bars, Almond Joy, and even Milk Duds. I picked up a few bags during my shopping excursion because you can never enough candy on hand this time of year. Plus these large bags are perfect for parties, trunk or treat events, and of course.. trick or treating!
What better way to hold a giant stash of treats than in a cute and colorful Furry Monster Candy Bowl? With Halloween two weeks away there is still plenty of time to create your own. This is such a fun way to hand out candy and trick-or-treaters are guaranteed to get a kick out of it.
Here is what you need to make a Furry Monster Candy Bowl:
- medium sized plastic cauldron
- bright colored crafting fur
- black & white glittered foam sheets
- 2 wooden dowels
- 2 eyeball ornaments
- 2 green styrofoam discs
- black pipe cleaners
- hot glue gun
Gathered your supplies? Let’s get started…
1. For the monster’s eyeballs I used two round plastic ornaments I had on hand from last year. You can find similar ornaments that resemble creepy eyeballs in various sizes within the Halloween section of your local craft store. After removing the metal piece attached to the ends of each ornament, I wiggled in the dowels until they were tightly secured. If your dowel is too small you may want to add a dab of hot glue within the rim of the ornament to keep it secure. If your dowel is too large, carefully use a sharp knife to shave away the tip until it fits.
2. Once attached, tightly wrap individual black pipe cleaners around the dowels until the wood is completely covered and hidden.
3. Using black & white glittered foam sheets I cut out the monster’s mouth and teeth. If the foam sheets have adhesive on the back this will be enough to attach the teeth to the mouth itself. If not, glue will do the trick.
4. To give the monster his vibrant furry coat, cut a sheet of crafting fur large enough to cover the entire surface area of the cauldron. Finding bright colored fur can be tricky so if you are looking for an alternative, grab a pair of Halloween legwarmers in the costume section at Walmart! They have them in various colors including hot pink, blue, and green. Cut the seems and remove the elastic piece before using.
5. When attaching fur to the cauldron it is best to use a hot glue gun. Leave enough excess on top so that you are able to fold it inside and cover the edges.
6. Attach two styrofoam discs together with glue and stick the wooden dowels about 3/4 of the way through. They should stand straight up but if they become loose or wiggly, squirt a generous amount of hot glue into the hole while the dowel is inside. Place the styrofoam inside of the cauldron. The weight of the candy will keep it snug as a bug but feel free to add a heavy amount of hot glue if it feels too loose.
7. Glue your goofy monster smile in the center of the furry coat.
8. Last but certainly not least, grab a giant bag of Hershey’s candy and fill er’ up.
The best part about the HUGE bags of Hershey’s candy is that they come in many different varieties. From chocolate bars to lollipops, these treats can’t be beat. Be on the look out for the exclusive Halloween orange Reese’s featuring the message “BOO!”
Get into the spooky spirit! Head to Walmart and stock up on your favorite Halloween sweets before the big day arrives. There is nothing worse than an empty candy bowl and a group of candy craving kiddos in costumes knocking on your door. Pure madness! We don’t want to wake up the ghoulies and goblins, do we?
