Pinterest has many wonderful ideas for holiday crafts, including Valentine’s Day! While browsing through pins last week I stumbled upon a project from Southern Lovely. She made a Button Burlap Heart Canvas and I fell in love with the final product. I thought the idea was genius and decided to take it upon myself to create one for my own home. I changed the colors a bit and added a little something extra with the buttons I had left over. Have you fallen in love yet? You can make your own Valentine Button Heart Canvas too!
Ready to get crafty? Here is what you are going to need..
- 1 blank canvas
- pink paint
- paintbrush or sponge
- painter’s tape
- red buttons
- red felt or burlap
- hot glue gun
- ruler (optional for precision!)
First thing is first. This is the hardest part and it isn’t even so hard! Using your painter’s tape you are going to place down strips to create a horizontal pattern across the canvas. I found it much easier using a ruler to measure the width between the strips. The tape is going to act as your boundary and when it is removed you will have pink & white stripes.
Once your board is lined to your liking, begin painting the white areas with your choice of color. I went with Pink because it stayed within the Valentine theme. Black or red work too. The canvas will absorb the paint rather quickly so it may take 3-4 coats to get the color to appear. Allow to dry but not completely. The paint should be slightly wet when you remove the tape strips. Otherwise it becomes very difficult to get off.
As you begin removing the painter’s tape you may notice that some of the paint has bled through onto the sections of white. To clean this up you can use a damp q-tip which will smooth out the edges and remove the excess color. If the paint does not come off with ease, go back later with a thin paint brush and white paint to touch up those areas. While the canvas is drying you can move on to your button heart.
Create a heart out of red felt or burlap. This will add texture and depth to your canvas. Using a hot glue gun attach the red buttons all over the surface to cover any material showing. Once it is dry you can glue the button encrusted heart in the middle of your painted canvas.
Using the remainder of the red buttons I spelled out the word “LOVE” and used the hot glue gun to secure them on the bottom of the canvas. If you don’t have enough buttons you can use a different color paint or a paint pen to add wording.
The Valentine Button Heart Canvas can add a personal touch to your decorations next month or even act as a gift for someone special. Hang it in your living room, kitchen, or even bathroom to spread a little love throughout the home. Also, the word “love” can always be alternated for two people’s names or a Valentine message to your sweety!
