Have you ever came across someone that didn’t like the ooey gooey buttery deliciousness of a Rice Krispie Treat? Neither have I! I grew up eating them & have always considered these to be a traditional treat that can be made from scratch in a matter of minutes. Not to mention, they are inhaled quicker than they actually take to make. They never do last very long when a batch is homemade & my free hand goes a little crazy with the marshmallows. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day I made a slight change to these treats by adding in candy corn. They turned out amazing. One slight ingredient change can make such a huge difference in the final product.
Ingredients:
- 4 tablespoons of butter or margarine
- 5 cups of mini marshmallows
- 6 cups of Kellog’s Rice Krispie Cereal
- 1 package of Valentine Candy Corn
To make these ooey gooey krispie treats you will also be needing red or pink food coloring, large bowl, baking sheet, wax paper, big wooden spoon, and heart shaped cookie cutters.
Directions:
1. In large bowl combine Rice Krispie cereal with candy corns.
2. Melt butter or margarine in large saucepan over low heat. Stir until butter is completely melted and avoided letting it sit too long. You don’t want the butter to be browned.
3. Add in marshmallows and stir constantly until the ingredients are blended. Continue to fold the melted marshmallow into the butter for a smooth consistency.
4. At this time add in your drops of red coloring. You can make your marshmallow pink or red depending on how many drops you put in.
5. Slowly pour the marshmallow mixture into the large bowl with cereal and candy corns. Mix as your pour because it will be very sticky and it’s more flexible when hot.
6. Transfer the mixture to a buttered glass dish or baking sheet lined with wax paper. Press down and allow to cool off.
7. Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to create Valentine treats.
There are two ways that you can make these treats with the candy corn. You can either add them immediately to the mixture or push them into the spread of rice krispies while they are cooling off. I tried both of these options and preferred adding them in the beginning rather than the end. When the butter and marshmallow mixture is hot it actually softens the candy corns so they blend in nicely with the rest of the ingredients. It makes them much more gooey and gives them a sweet chewy like texture. If you want the candy corn to be more noticeable you can always go back and press a few into the top layer for looks!
